Emily of New Moon Read-along
Join us every week as readers from around the world respond to a chapter from L.M. Montgomery's beloved novel.

Welcome to the
Emily of New Moon
Read-along
Last year, the LMMI hosted the Anne of Green Gables Read-along to commemorate the 110th anniversary. It was such a success, that we are doing it again. Join us every Tuesday from May 7, 2019 to December 3, 2019 where readers will bring us their insights into the chapter of the week. Share and follow #LMMIReadalong.

Chapter 1: The House in the Hollow
Welcome to the Emily of New Moon Read Along! Today the LMMI begins with a reflection by Marjorie Hembroff.

Chapter 2: A Watch in the Night
Here is a brief reflection on Chapter 2, which I hope might provoke further reflection for other readers, or aid discussion on the book as a whole. As a long-time Emily fan, I am delighted to contribute.

Chapter 3: A Hop Out of Kin
I met Emily Byrd Starr (and thus L.M. Montgomery) when I was eleven, and I first read a copy that my mother and her sisters and her mother had read.

Chapter 4: A Family Conclave
I find it so interesting that every reading of a novel is in essence a rewriting of it based on the knowledge we bring to our interpretations.

Chapter 5: Diamond Cut Diamond
Emily Byrd Starr! A star she is! As she seals her fate with the Murrays, Emily feels that her life as a Starr will never be the same. After living her whole life with her father (a Starr), Emily is torn.

Chapter 5: Diamond Cut Diamond
After forty-ish years of reading this book, I finally decided to look up the meaning of this chapter’s title; according to The Free Dictionary by Farlex, this phrase refers to “a situation in which a sharp-witted or cunning person meets their match.” Yes.

Chapter 6: New Moon
In this chapter, Emily is introduced to New Moon, its inhabitants, and its ways.

Chapter 7: The Book of Yesterday
Chapter 7 of Emily of New Moon acquaints the reader with Emily’s new home in Blair Water while establishing several of the themes that are explored throughout the novel.

Chapter 8: Trial by Fire
This chapter introduces Emily to more new experiences in school and meeting other children, while also showing more about Aunt Elizabeth and Laura’s beliefs about raising children.

Chapter 9: A Special Providence
In this chapter, the narrator light-heartedly refers to Emily’s “destiny” (111) as a scribbler.
