Avery Award Winners

The Avery Scholarship, henceforth called The Avery Award, was originally established by the owners of Cavendish Figurines Ltd., now known as Shop & Play. Jeannette Arsenault and Don Maxfield, and their staff, as a contribution to their Island community in appreciation of the legacy of L.M. Montgomery on PEI and in tribute to the "spirit of Anne." The fictional Avery Scholarship in L.M. Montgomery's famous novel Anne of Green Gables is the crowning achievement of Anne Shirley's year studying to be a teacher at Queen's College.

Queen's is a fictional version of L.M. Montgomery's own alma mater, Prince of Wales College, one of the founding institutions of UPEI, making Anne and Montgomery alumnae of this university. Anne's Avery Scholarship, awarded in a teacher training program for the highest grade in English, highlights the values of education, literature, and writing. In November 2016, Jeannette and Don agreed to revise the original criteria for the scholarship and create an award that would support UPEI students who have an interest in L.M. Montgomery and have a desire to pursue excellence in writing while working with a mentor from the L.M. Montgomery Institute (LMMI) at UPEI. The successful candidate will participate in a learning opportunity with the LMMI through contributions to the lmmontgomery.ca website and other social media outreach efforts by the LMMI. The learning opportunity project will be coordinated between the LMMI mentor and successful student recipient. UPEI students can learn more about the award here.
