Emily of New Moon Read-along
Join us every week as readers from around the world respond to a chapter from L.M. Montgomery's beloved novel.
Welcome to the
Emily of New Moon
Read-along
Last year, the LMMI hosted the Anne of Green Gables Read-along to commemorate the 110th anniversary. It was such a success, that we are doing it again. Join us every Tuesday from May 7, 2019 to December 3, 2019 where readers will bring us their insights into the chapter of the week. Share and follow #LMMIReadalong.
Chapter 12: The Tansy Patch
When the L.M. Montgomery Institute first sent out the call for the Emily of New Moon read-along, I knew exactly which chapter I wanted: “The Tansy Patch.”
Chapter 13: A Daughter of Eve
“A Daughter of Eve” is one of several chapters in the episodic Emily of New Moon that contributes little to the novel’s main plot yet provides insight into Emily and marks a turning point in the development of her character.
Chapter 14: Fancy Fed
When the readalong signups opened, I jumped for chapter fourteen. To me, this chapter has always been about connection—connection to Emily and connection to my family.
Chapter 15: Various Tragedies
Here we are at almost the exact middle of the book— Chapter 15 out of a total of 31. And what a rich chapter it is, so much so that I find its title almost comically inadequate.
Chapter 16: Check for Miss Brownell
In “Chapter 16: Check for Miss Brownell,” the hostilities between sensitive Emily Byrd Starr and sarcastic Miss Brownell come to a head.
Chapter 17: Living Epistles
“Chapter 17: Living Epistles” is a sequence of letters from Emily to her deceased father without any additional narrative voice or authorial commentary.
Chapter 18: Father Cassidy
Chapter 18 entitled “Father Cassidy” is very enjoyable, because it is full of humour. Father Cassidy, an Irish Catholic priest, only appears in this and the following chapter, but he makes a great impression on Emily and readers.
Chapter 19: Friends Again
The title suggests that this short chapter is about Emily’s reconciliation with Lofty John, but it seems to me to be primarily about divisions and potential divisions rather than reconciliation.
Chapter 20: By Aerial Post
While “Chapter 20: By Aerial Post” spans the Christmas season, it is not all holiday cheer. Emily reveals that her cat, Mike, has died from suspected poisoning.
Chapter 21: Romantic But Not Comfortable
“Chapter XXI: Romantic But Not Comfortable” starts out by describing Emily rationalizing about having bangs.
